Could cars be banned from Budapest’s party district?
The Erzsébetváros district of Budapest would ban cars from its territory. The local government is looking into how this could be realised. They are also testing what impact it would have on other residents of the district and the city. The regulation would take effect for motorists from 1 July 2022 at the earliest.
Car ban in one of the districts of Budapest
One of the districts of the Hungarian capital would introduce a car ban. In the Erzsébetváros district of Budapest, the local government is investigating the possibility of banning cars with the help of local people and experts. According to the decision of the Board of Representatives, the extended trial period of traffic calming will end on June 30, 2022, writes index.hu.
Inner-Erzsébetváros could become a protected area.
Péter Nidermüller, the mayor of the district, told Infostart about the matter. The spokesman for the Democratic Coalition said the car ban would run from Klauzál Square to Charles Boulevard. However, the exact borders of the area may still change.
Only residents of the neighbourhood and suppliers of goods, shops, and restaurants in the area may enter the protected zone.

Changes may come throughout Budapest
Many are worried about the impact the change will have on other parts of the city. “I do not think that the creation of this protected area would have a particularly large impact on traffic regulations in other districts. But we are also discussing the issue with neighbouring districts,” Niedermüller said.
The municipality wants pedestrian streets and public spaces.
“The establishment of the protected area is part of the Budapest parking order. We need thorough negotiations with the capital, BKK, and Budapest Közút,” Nidermüller added.
In addition, the General Assembly of the capital will decide later this year when out-of-date cars will be driven out of Budapest. The Hungarian capital has joined a previously launched European initiative. Gergely Karácsony, the lord mayor of Budapest, has previously pointed out that they may restrict the use of diesel cars in Budapest within five years.
